Earth and Mars are converging for a close encounter--but not as close as some people think.
So the other eve Tricia and I get out of the movies and look around for Mars...
Where the heck is it? I saw the moon, it was bright.. but no mars.
You would have thought if it's as big as the moon, how could you miss it.
Well it turns out the email recently passed around about Mars was a hoax.
The real Mars is the brightest star in the sky at about 45 degrees around midnight.
It's directly over head close to sunrise.
I got this straight from Roland
Although closest approach is still months away, Mars is already conspicuous in the early morning. Before the sun comes up, it's the brightest object in the eastern sky, really eye-catching. If you have a telescope, even a small one, point it at Mars. You can see the bright icy South Polar Cap and strange dark markings on the planet's surface.

Went to the NY Renaissance Faire
Went to the NY Renaissance Faire today.
Weather was cool and slightly rainy.. until later in the afternoon when it got heavier.
Still it was a day away..
We had our customary Turkey Leg, Soul in a bread bowl and fresh Potato chips (mmmm).
No mead. I was the driver this time around.
We saw a Magic Show, Dexter Trip on the high wire and a comedy act.
In addition we stopped at the birds of prey and saw different birds this time around.
Wow a real live vulture. Cool bird but a bit scary.
When they talk about eating like a vulture... I now understand what it means.
This bird shreded and gulped a chicken leg in 7 seconds.
Tricia took some pictures of the parrot habitat called Parrots without People.
I'll post soon.
We also strolled by the petting zoo which seemed to have very sad animals.
Poor fellows. Of course we stopped by to feed them a bit.
We stopped by one shop that presented the art of sphere's.
A cool showmanship artform with a acyric/crystal like ball.
One of the demonstrators was quite good.
I would have bought one, but the price just seemed so out of line.
$35 for an acryic ball ? Hmmm Is that right?
The DVD was priced about what I expected which was 25, but you get a $10 discount if you purchase a ball.
So for $50 bucks you could be sphereing and cheering..
Hmmm...
It rained for quite some time at the end of the eve so we cut it short and headed home.
We'll be going again in Sep. if anyone cares to join in.

The 40 Year Old Virgin

Pretty funny movie.
Makes you laugh, Gives you the warm and fuzzies.
Comedic moments. Although after a while I got tired of everything being about pu**y. But then again, you go into this movie knowing that's wah it's about. Characters and acting are well choose and thought out. It's on the level of an american pie movie (only up a few notches) and a Jim Carey movie (turned down a notch).
it could have been over done, but there was a level of belivability within the story line.
Good Flick for Laughs.
I give it a 2.5 of 5

The Red Planet is about to be spectacular!
|
|
|
This month and next, Earth is catching up with Mars in an encounter that will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in recorded history. The next time Mars may come this close is
in 2287. Due to the way Jupiter's gravity tugs on
Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can only be
certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth
in the Last 5,000 years, but it may be as long as
60,000 years before it happens again.
The encounter will culminate on August 27th when
Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles of Earth and
will be (next to the moon) the brightest object in
the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9
and will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide. At a modest
75-power magnification
Mars will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye.
Mars will be easy to spot. At the
beginning of August it will rise in the east at 10p.m.
and reach its azimuth at about 3 a.m.
By the end of August when the two planets are
closest, Mars will rise at nightfall and reach its
highest point in the sky at 12:30a.m. That's pretty
convenient to see something that no human being has
seen in recorded history. So, mark your calendar at
the beginning of August to see Mars grow
progressively brighter and brighter throughout the
month.

R.I.P Bob Moog
A Pioneer of the synthesizer world, a name I always respected and attribited to that fat thick sweeping syntehsizer sound.
Bob Moog passes away and a piece of my heart crys.
His instruments were so influential on modern music.
Tracks from popcorn by hotbutter, to the era of fat disco bass and sweeps, to Emererson, Lake & Palmer and Rush.
Synthesizer innovator Moog dies at 71

Oy....
What started off as a nice day is turning out to be a bad one.
Vadim, my coworker, called in saying his wife called him. His dog was not moving.
It was just laying there. He went back home to bring it to the Dr.
Update:
Turns out the dog must have ate something bad.
While speaking with Tricia, she said she did not sleep well and her eye was a little blurry.
Shortly thereafter, she called back saying she was going to the eye Dr.
The condition seemed to get worse. She had floaters, webs and the vision was blurring more.
Update:
The Dr. saw bleeding in one of the eyes and had to do laser surgery to seal up some of the blood vessels.
The blurred vision should get better in a few days or so.

Boating Accident in Bayshore
A recent boating accident near bayshore involved Michael and Maria's friend.
See link for more information.
The Lieneck family, from Deer Park, was in a 1989 Bayliner heading north to the Bay Shore Marina when a boat crashed into them, driven by a man police believe was intoxicated,
Relatives of the Lieneck family said they want to believe it was an accident -- "an act of God" -- and hope drug test results also come back negative. "His blood-alcohol came back zero. I'm happy," said Brianna's uncle, Thomas Costa, outside Southside Hospital.

New Arrivals
Another Arrival today.
Brass Aristocrat, Blue Fluid/Yellow Lava, Pop Top and Bottle Cap globe. Really bought it for the parts. Plan to dump out the insides and merge 2 cranberry globes into it. Saweet.
Fricken base had the bulb busted and socket bent. Took me 20 minutes to reset it all and get the glass out.
Seller actually shipped the lamp with the globe on the base. Lucky it did not dent.

Motley Crue's Performance
A beautiful summers night, minimal humidty, optiumum comfort and temperature.
The Show Rocked. ![]()
Overall the show was a 6.5 out of 10.
This was a show sort of geard more for guys.
Doubt I will go again. Once was enough ;)
See the extended entry for more detail
High Points
Band was tight and on the money
Side performances were pretty good aside from the lewdness.
Cartoon was funny.
Stage Setup was good.
Pyrotechnics good.
They played good early tunes
Low Points.
"C'mon you fuckers" I really got tired of that.
Titty Cam. Was this really needed?
Lewedness of the performers. Joe would have loved it.
Crowd did not seem as electrified as I would have expected.
Friends Met
Mick, Avril, Sabrina, Jean, Victor.
So after many years after seeing Motley Crue open for Ozzy, I got to see them do thier own show. An interesting reunion show. It was more electrified then I had remembered in the past. The band performed well, Electrified would be my word. They seemed genuinely excited to play Jones beach. Although Tricia made a comment that it seemed put on. The capacity crowd on the other hand was less electrified then I have seen for other concerts. Tommy Lee had to keep on coaxing the crowd to scream out.
The stage setup was interesting. They had a circus tent curtain in front of the band before opening and one in back of the band. The concert had a Circus, carnival feel to it with the additional people performing. There was a "small person" along with 3 leather clad ladies. They each had performances sometimes along with the show, other times just as side shows. Some of the acts were a bit lewd, others were interesting. The ladies (in stripper getup) did various dances and acrobatics on the ladders, chains and a big ring. Reminded me a bit of Circque Du Soliel. During one of the songs they also performed in outfits resembling that of side show perfrmers. One on stilts, the other doing various fire twirling and breathing.
For a pre-show opener they had a claymation type cartoon with the band members talking about a gig. A news cast is overheard where a planatoid is heading to the earth and it will destroy the earth. It was funny to an extent where the band members are contemplating the last gig of the earth show. heh. Complete with facets each members personality, the characters make you laugh at the Rock Metal glam band antics.
They opened up with Shout at the Devil, but yet with a tempo just a little too fast for my taste. I've always liked that song, but not at that tempo. They played a number of songs from Shout at the Devil and Too Fast For Love. This was quite a thrill for me as it is my favorite era. I sort of lost touch with them after Shout at the Devil. Dunno why. Other songs, (that I can rememeber)
Looks that kill
Red Hot
Ten Seconds To Love
Live Wire
Too Fast For Love
Louder Then Hell
They had a pyrotechnic show that rivaled Kiss. Sometimes even a little better. More flames, More sparks, More explosions. Done very well.
The bands performance was on the money. Sometimes better then I had remembered. Mick Mars seemed better then ever. Well after all he should, they've been playing for a long time. Vince Neil's voice was right on and as I had always remembered. It struck me odd after seeing him on The Surreal Life. His voice on the surreal life is deeper and more low key, then hearing him sing in a higher ket made it seem odd. Yet still, was as it always was. Nicki Six was good, Tommy Lee, although never my favorite did well too. I woudl give the band a 6.5 out of 10. not a bad rating, they just did not quite do it for me or too much of the crowd (unless coaxed).
Each member did an interesting solo. Solo's of the 80's always seemed to be just a waste or show off point. As musical tastes of mine have matured I respect the solo's less and less. I found some of these to be pretty interesting at parts. Bands these days are encompassing solo's with other instrumetal parts to augment the sound and this did well for Nikki Six and Tommy Lee. At first I did not even realize it was a Nikki Six solo. It was fun as he encompassed himself in sparks and washes of synthesized sound. Tommy Lee's solo was intersting too. Although not a technical display of genious, it was fun. Tommy also encompassed other instruments into his solo which made it all the more interesting. Later in the solo he was hooked up to aire and flown into the air. At the top of the left side of the venue was a plaform with all sorts of percussive instruments. On he went to solo up there. Boom explosion.. He flys to the right side onto another platform. More instruments (with synthesized accompanyment) I liked this side ;). Boom over to the other side. More bell like percussion.
then later on down to the stage as he cheers the crowd on "C'mon you fuckers". OK Enough of that.. Not something I enjoyed. So then he brings out the titty cam. Wait what is this.. Tommy Lee coaxes the ladies near the front to lift up thier shirts for the guys and shows it on the big screen. I was surprised how many woman did it. Tommy Lee cheers.. "C'mon guys.. help me out". Not my favorite moments.

Motley Crue
I'm heading to Motley Crue With Tricia at Jones Beach Theatre tonight.
If you attend, I park in section R.
Should be a cool show, I have not see this band in many years.
Last time I saw them they opened for Ozzy in the early 80s.
I'm getting chills thinking about it.
